Opéra national de Bordeaux

Opéra national de Bordeaux

The Grand-Théâtre, masterpiece of the architect Victor Louis, was inaugurated in 1780. In the course of its long history, mingling theatrical representations, opera and concerts, the Grand-Théâtre has, between the eighteenth and the twenty-first centuries, had the most famous artists perform. At the end of the eighteenth century, the Grand-Théâtre housed a hundred artists from every discipline and offered an extremely varied repertoire. Nowadays, this stage offers the public different operas, ballets, concerts and shows devoted to youngsters.

Located Cours Georges Clemenceau at the heart of the historic town center, the Auditorium de Bordeaux, conceived by the music-loving architect Michel Pétuaud-Létang, opened to the public in January 2013. Prodigious in structure and through its acoustics (work of the Belgium expert acoustician Eckhard Kahle), this scene offers a programme as prestigious as it is eclectic. Financed by the town of Bordeaux with support from the State and from the Conseil régional d’Aquitaine, this new temple of knowledgement in music - 1 442 seats and the biggest orchestra pit in Europe – puts on masterpieces of musical literature and original works, favours exchanges with musicians and opens up to forms of music from the world  over and to jazz...

Today, directed by Marc Minkowski, the Opéra national de Bordeaux – which puts on the major part of its programme on these very scenes – has a still greater permanent team of artists : to the 107 musicians of the l’Orchestre national de Bordeaux Aquitaine, one needs must add the 44 dancers of the Ballet and the 36 members of the Opéra national de Bordeaux choir, not to mention the 80 or so technicians, painters, sculptors or costume designers from the theatre set, costume and prop workshops.
