Opéra national du Rhin

Opéra national du Rhin

The Opéra national du Rhin (OnR) owes its exemplary character to the specific contribution of the three cities which compose it: Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Colmar. An association of communes, the OnR is jointly managed by the three cities which each has its own creative activity: the Opera and the Choir at Strasbourg, the Ballet de l'OnR a national choregraphic centre since 1985 – at Mulhouse, and the Opéra Studio –  a training cell for young singers – at Colmar. The OnR works closely with the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg and with the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse, which play for the operatic and choreographic performances. It furthermore has the largest workshops in France for the making of scenery after those of Paris.

The cultural policy of the Opéra national du Rhin, directed by Marc Clémeur, is expressed through an annual programme of over 138 operatic performances, 23 recitals and concerts, 44 ballet evenings, 55 performances of the Opéra Studio and 64 performances specifically for young audiences (including 24 for schools), 18 specific events, which comes to a total of 223 performances. After over forty years, the Alsatian experience has become a model. Whilst remaining fiercely attached to its regional and European roots, the Opéra national du Rhin stands out as a key institution of French and international operatic life, having in November 1997 been awarded the appellation « Opéra national ».
