Théâtre Impérial de Compiègne

The Théâtre Impérial (Imperial Theatre) of Compiègne, one of the finest acoustics in the world

The renowned conductor Carlo-Maria Giulini, invited to direct a concert in 1992, considered the auditorium to be “one of the finest acoustics in the world, more accomplished than that of the Musikverein of Vienna, notwithstanding the standard in the matter”.

An architectural masterpiece, the Théâtre Impérial is a technical tool of the first order: the auditorium, for 90% made of wood, possesses a natural reverberation which endows it with exceptional acoustics, amongst the very best to be found. The upper parts of the building rest on a system of steel structures.

Since 2009, a new momentum has been instilled for the Théâtre Impérial, the only musical and operatic venue between Paris and Lille, at the behest of the director Eric Rouchaud. His vision confers a privileged place to music and to opera, from Baroque to the present, and more specifically to the voice. Distinct artistic orientations are explored (opera, recitals, both chamber and symphony music, as well as musicals or ballet to wit). He makes it a point of honour to encourage young talent.

The Théâtre Impérial is an open haven, a place to invent original connections to society. In partnership with the Espace Jean Legendre (Jean Legendre Centre), a pluri- and inter- disciplinary scene in Compiègne, the artistic project developed under directorship of Eric Rouchaud makes today’s productions accessible to each and all.

This opera house actively collaborates with different national or international operatic institutions (the Co[opéra]tive, the Opéra-Comique, the Théatre des Bouffes du Nord, the Festival d’Automne in Paris, etc.) as well as taking part in co-productions, this whilst remaining aware of our regional roots and attentive to keeping close to the local people.

An inventive programme made up of respected voices, of renowned artists as well as of experienced young talent, is thus on offer with the clear aim of providing access to everyone and notably to young people. The constant increase in attendance shows the rising interest shown by a heterogeneous audience.
